It'sthat time of year to check your list twice. If you don't have your list done by now and have checked it at leastonce, you had better hurry!!

Everyyear, after the holiday season, I find I have left something undone. I'll try not to do that this year. I would like to be able to greet each of youin person this year, but that is impossible, so I will do it this way, byletter.

Ihave said "You are the number one volunteer for OptimistInternational," and that is true. But, most importantly, youare the most important person to those 32 kids that your membershiprepresents. They need you. They need you to provide growth opportunitiesin education, sports, the arts, humanities, health and moral support, to move forward in their lives.

Aswe move through the final stages of this year, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, andcelebrate the New Year, hug all around you and celebrate to the fullest oflife.

Asan Optimist, celebrate the good that you have done for so many, many kids thatneeded you. Give thanks for having theability to help them.

Thisis your time with family and friends. This is your time to receive comfort from them and give comfort tothem. This is your time to enjoy.

WORKSHOPS

Here is the tentative list of workshops:

District 13, Your Club, A Future Direction for Us All - hosted by John Plenke. This will be a double session workshop focused on the future of Optimist clubs.
Child Wellness Campaign - hosted by Tom Nyquist. This will be a double session workshop that will discuss on where the Childhood Cancer Campaign is heading.
Club President Training - hosted by Don Morrison. This is a double session training workshop for Club Presidents ... if you missed the workshop at the Annual Convention, this workshop is for you.
Membership 101 - hosted by Roger Lesofski. This is scheduled for the first session block and will focus on bringing in new members.
Internet Safety Education - hosted by Brian Wallace. Scheduled for the second session period, Brian will cover what is in the Internet Safety program for kids and adults and how to start the program in your club.
PGI - hosted by Jeff Barnhart. Scheduled for the second session period. Jeff will introduce PGI and discuss how to implement an active PGI program in your club as a means to strengthen member participation.

International President Jack Creswell encourages all Optimists to do "100% and then some!"

Whatever we do and how we do it must always result in raising kids to a new level. We simply cannot give just 50% or 90% as our goal and accept it. 100% and then some must be the operative.

The time has come; 2011-2012 is the time for change. We must move forward with the groundwork that has been laid from past governors to move forward toward "Spiraling Upward" into the future.

How do we do that?

Review, reflect, debate, and embrace the new generation who have the willingness and the energy to facilitate change.
We must review our organizations, including how the District does business. Each Club should set aside time to review their mission statement and the programs that are ongoing, and then ask questions that encourage debate about the future needs of the local community. Reflect on the great things the Club has accomplished. We all need to know that what we are doing is indeed making a difference in kid's lives.
It is difficult for me to learn a new language, and maybe you as well. But we all must learn to bridge the communication gap between the older members and those just chomping at the bit to propel Optimism and Optimists into the future.
Let's all do a media blitz. Shout about the town, "THIS IS WHAT WE DO"!! Come join our Optimist group and help us develop new programs, help with existing programs, and you will "Bring Out the Best in Kids."

I get goose bumps just thinking about how we can make a difference. We can "Bring Out the Best in Kids." We can create a "Spiraling Upward"!!

My fellow Optimist,

This is the year “it” is finally going to happen! So what is “it,” you are asking?

My reply is quite simple. GROWTH! That is what we are and must be all about for the foreseeable future. For far too long now, we have suffered under the burden of negative growth. Shrinking numbers mean financial problems, fewer projects and, finally, less service for our young people. Not a pretty picture.

These are certainly not any of the reasons you or I joined this great organization!

The group of leaders and Members who have come together this year have rededicated themselves to making us grow! No longer will you hear, “We can’t,” but rather, “What can I do to make ‘it’ happen?”
Now that you know and understand just what your job is (growth), we need to tell you where your resources and support are going to be coming from.

Our staff in St. Louis and Montreal stands ready to guide and direct you. Our website is just filled with information for your use. Also, never forget to call upon the current or, for that matter, the past leaders of our organization. All stand ready to serve.

Our theme this year, “100% and then some,” really says it quite nicely. It is, after all, that little bit of extra effort that will make all the difference.

“And then some” will make this the year others will talk about for years to come.

I ask of you most sincerely, step forward today so that tomorrow there will be an Optimist to hear a child’s call for help.

There is a "Tour Guide of Website Changes" available which will explain some of the changes and new features that have been added.

Blackfalds Optimist Club Signs 20 FOOs

Because Edie McInnes, John McCrimmon and Heather Osborne of the Blackfalds Optimist Club in Alberta, Canada chose to be "in the arena," they made it happen and made twenty new Friends along the way.

Population: 6,000

When Edie McInnes heard about the success of the Greenfield, Iowa Optimist Club's efforts to take-on Optimist International President Danny Rodgers's challenge to recruit twenty Friends of Optimists between July 1st and September 30th in their town of 2,000 people, she felt compelled to make it happen in her town of 6,000.

Edie had self-doubt, but that self-doubt turned into inspiration. She thought, "well, I can probably get quite a few, and I could get a few of our Members to help out." The Blackfalds Optimist Club had a party on Edie's deck. "We just started brainstorming," says Edie. Within days they talked to the President of the Chamber of Commerce. Within hours an email was distributed to Chamber Members. Within minutes Edie recieved a direct response from Denise Nielsen. That same day, Edie faxed Denise the Friend of Optimists application and Denise joined.

Remove the pressure, and it makes it easier for Optimists to ask and for the potential Friend to say, "yes."

Heather's story

Heather Osborne is a longtime Member of the Blackfalds Optimist Club. She says, "I've overcome a lot of small issues within me by being an Optimist Member. So this is just another little challenge along the way." With the tenacity "To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best," there's no doubt why new Friend Denise Nielsen says, "If these guys need anymore help, get a hold of me."

Twenty Friends in Two Weeks -- IT CAN BE DONE

Optimist John McCrimmon says, "I know I had my Chiropractor appointment this morning, and I was talking to the ladies in the office about it." Chiropractor, Doctor, Dentist, Superintendent, Teacher, Firefighter, Mom, Dad, Neighbor, Brother-in-Law, Sister-in-Law and Friends...all of these people can be part of your Twenty Friends.

Do Optimist clubs offer education scholarships?
Someone has asked me if our club runs an Internet Safety Program. Where can I find information about that?

Do Optimist clubs offer education scholarships?Optimist International offers three scolarship competitions, the Oratorical Competition, the Essay Competition, and the Communication for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Competition. Winners of those competitions are awarded scholarships that they can collect when they enter a post-secondary education institution.

16. Someone has asked me if our club runs an Internet Safety Program. Where can I find information about that?

In 2007, Optimist International partnered with ikeepsafe.org to develop an internet safety education program. You can direct interested people to our Youth Programs page on Internet Safety, and we also have a resources page for the program.

17. Our club secretary passed on and I have been asked to take over. I need some immediate help. Who should I contact? What needs to be done?

Suddenly losing a club secretary and/or treasurer due to illness, death or personal reasons can create a treamendous amount of concern. We suggest that you contact your Zone Lieutenant Governor and the District Secretary-Treasurer for assistance and guidance.

18. I am moving to another community. Where can I go to find a list of Optimist Clubs?

If you are moving to a community in Alberta, Montana, Saskatchewan or Cody Wyoming, you can refer to our online Zone and Club List or consult our District Directory. If you are moving somewhere else in North America, we wish you well on your future endeavours and recommend that you consult the Optimist International website for a complete list of all clubs.

19. I am moving to another small community that does not have an Optimist Club. What can I do to remain involved?

You have several choices ... (1) Retain your membership with your current club (once an Optimist, always an Optimist). (2) You can transfer your membership to the nearest club. (3) Retain your current membership, and on October 1st become a Friend of Optimist (FOO). Of course we have information on signing up as a FOO.

20. I am interested in serving on the District Team. Who should I contact?

8. Where are the District Meetings for the coming year?

The schedule for District meetings can be found on the District Meetings page. We also publicly announce each meeting about 6-8 weeks prior on our "OptiNews" blog, and the information for the upcoming meeting is always located in the right hand column on each "OptiNews" blog page.

9. What are Optimist Youth Programs and where can I find more information?

Optimist International sponsors many international youth programs that clubs can choose to participate in. Those programs include internet safety education, education scholarship competitions, fighting childhood cancer, youth sports competitions like golf and curling, youth safety and youth appreciation. You can check out details on any of the available programs on the District Youth Programs page.

10. I need to provide information to prospective new members. Do you have something on what Optimists clubs do?

We certainly do. Here is a brief introduction on What Optimists Clubs Do that you can provide to prospective new members.

Your club should also have a supply of membership application brochures that contain information on youth programs, and you can always suggest to your club that they create their own brochure to hand out to prospective new members.

11. I have a club project that I want to advertise online as soon as possible. Can you help me?

The quickest way to get information online is to post it to your club website or blog. We also invite you to (1) post the information about the activity on the District Facebook Page. You will need a Facebook account and you must "Like" the District Facebook page to post information. (2) You can email the information including any graphic files, brochures, invitations or registration forms (all in PDF format) to optinews@gmail.com and we will post the information on the District Blog.

12. I have been asked to build a club website but I don't know how to start. Do you have some information?

We have just created a new educational blog called "Put Your Club Online" that will contain information on how to build a Facebook page, a club website/blog, a Twitter feed account, and club portal "just for members". Articles and "How-to" PDF guides will be made available in the near future.

13. I am new and keep hearing all these acronyms. What is NCB, CPA, PGI, NOW, JOOI, OI, OIF, CCOF, DFR and CFR?

I guess that all orgainizations have their own glossary of special terms. Here is what those acroynms mean:

JOOI - Youth Clubs

Certainly. Optimist International has a special level of clubs for youth organized under the Junior Optimists and Octagons International (JOOI) program. Youth can build their own clubs, elect their own president and club executive, raise their own funds and run their own community service projects. Many of these clubs are organized as School extra-curricular activities. JOOI clubs provide a great opportunity for our youth to volunteer their time serving their community and it gives many youth practical leadership and management experience. Is Your Club on Facebook Yet?

I did a little research and discovered that there are 15 unique Facebook pages or groups representing 13 District clubs, Zone 5 and the AMS&NW Optimist District itself. Considering how recent Facebook pages are, that is truly remarkable. Some clubs host a Facebook "Group" while other clubs host a Facebook "Page".

That leaves 45 clubs that do not have a Facebook presence ... why haven't you joined yet?

What is your club missing?

What is so important about an online presence ... why does my club need to go online?

That's a resonable question. There is NO mandatory reason to put your club online. In fact, you can save yourself and your club members effort and time by not creating an online presence for your club ... but ... you will be missing out!

What will you be missing? Ahh, now that's the more important question! Here goes ... what will your club be missing out on:

A chance to add credibility to your club throughout your community.
A chance to tell your club's story ... what is unique about your club.
A chance to thank volunteers and donors for their contributions.
A chance to recognize your members publicly for their efforts.
A chance to invite people to join your club.
A chance to advertise your club fundraisers and community service projects.
A chance for the recipients of your club's service projects to thank you for your efforts.
A chance to connect to your club members, advertise meetings and special guest speakers.

Here are the top 3 reasons why Facebook is so attractive to a service club:

Easy and quick to implement: Anyone with average computer skills and a Facebook account to create an online presence for their club. All you need is a little background info, a digital image file to use as a logo, and some spare time. With the proper instructions, you can create a Facebook "Page" or "Group" in under one hour.

It's all about community: Facebook gives you the ability to engage club members, friends, co-workers, fellow members from other clubs, non-member volunteers and potential new club members in sharing content and expressing ideas.

People can find you in Google: Facebook content is indexed in major search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo. So people who do a search for your club can easily find it ... go ahead and try it ... search for "Optimist Club Prince Albert" in Google and Bing. Facebook also comes with it's own powerful search engine that allows Facebook users to search for you. Again, log in to your Facebook account (if you have one) and run a search for "Optimist Club Prince Albert".

Community Project Awards

The Community Projects Awards (CPA) Program is an annual competition that recognizes Clubs for their community service and fundraising activities. The program stimulates membership involvement, gives the Club a reference book that can be used as a guide for organizing a similar activity in the future and assists the organization in acquiring information to share with other Clubs looking for a new project or fundraiser. Submission of a CPA entry to the District is an Honor Club requirement. Clubs can purchase a CPA submission binder package from Optimist Supplies or they can download the CPA package:

CPA submission packages must be delivered to Activities & CPA Chair Marilyn Bushell at the 1st Quarter District Conference where they will be judged. The District winners will be forwarded on to the OI contest.

I wanted to take a few moments to announce some recent changes to District Webservices that have just been implemented:

On our District website at www.amsnwoptimist.org we have added some quick pick navigation graphics in the menu column on the right. You will now see graphics for our District "OptiNews" blog, our District Facebook Page, our District Twitter feed, and to "Put Your Club Online"
"Put Your Club Online With Blogger" has been retired and been replaced with "Put Your Club Online" at putyourclubonline.blogspot.com. The focus of the new blog is to cover a wider variety of topics and not just focus on Blogger. You should start to see new blog posts appear regularly.
The URL for our Facebook page has been changed to www.facebook.com/amsnwoptimist. If you had links or graphics on your web sites or blogs that pointed to the District Facebook page, you will need to adjust those links.

We are in the last month of our Optimist year for 2010-11. On October 1st, our District website will be replaced with a revised site for the 2011-12 Optimist year. Our District facebook page, "OptiNews" blog and Twitter page will also experience some minor adjustments. If there is information that you want to retain, we recommend that you save a copy of online documents and digital graphic files as we cannot guarantee that they will still be available once the switch to the 2011-12 year is completed.

21st Century Social Marketing at the Club Level

At the 2011 District Convention, George Lewko and I presented a workshop on "21st Century Social Marketing at the Club Level". The focus of this workshop was to discuss social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and blogs and discuss how we can use that technology to raise public awareness about our club, service projects and fundraisers that we run, and how to attract new volunteers.

During that workshop, we looked at three generations: the "Baby Boomers", "Gen X" and "Gen Y" ... the differences between them and what motivates each generation.

I must thank Maggie Fairchild, Director of Social Media at Optimist International, for her original presentation slide deck which I have modified to include the information on the different generation profiles.

I should note that I found some very interesting online articles that I based the additional slides and information on. I highly recommend that you read them as they provide a great deal of additional insight that we were not able to cover during the workshop:

At an open table discussion hosted by OI President Danny Rodgers with all the Convention attendees, there were many ideas that were expressed on making Optimist International stronger. Here are some of the quotes:

"You are not too old to change."

"We need to express our passion about what we do to attract the younger generation to join our clubs and participate in our efforts."

"People want to be part of amazing things ... part of something that makes a difference."

"Focus on sharing the phenomenal things you do with your local community."

We need to start reaching out individually and collectively to our club members ... use real old means of communication ... phone calls, personally signed notes, mailed invitations, personal thank you notes. We need to get more personal in our marketing.

Past LG John Plenke (Bozeman, MT) reminded us that we participated in an open workshop at last year's convention. John asked everyone if they had read the notes from that session ... not many had, so as a favor to John, I am re-posting the links to those notes:

We also discussed the future of club strength and how it is more important to focus on recruiting and reatining active members in our clubs who participate in club projects ... attending meetings is not important ... serving our communities to satisfy existing needs is where our efforts need to be placed.

We expressed an interest in retaining the individual and club recognition programs. OI is focusing on using technology to reach out to more Optimists to provide online, interactive training. We will try to get that information to you in the near future.

Welcome from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan! We are gathered at the Prince Albert Inn to share in some fellowship and to pass along some new information. We are pleased to welcome Optimist International President Danny Rodgers who is experiencing the AMS&NW charm on his second visit to our District. We last welcomed President Danny and his wife Jill in 2005 at our convention in Sherwood Park, Alberta.

There are six workshops for members to attend, and more in-depth training for the incoming Lieutenant Governors, Club President-Elects and Incoming Club Secretary-Treasurers.

Last night we gathered for a 50th Birthday Celebration for the Optimist Club of Prince Albert, who are commemorating 50 years of service to the youth in Prince Albert.

I'll be taking some photos and posting updates in our District blog and our facebook page. For those who couldn't make it, this will be your opportunity to experience some of our weekend. I am a firm believer in the ‘power ofthree’… a concept that you can best remember important facts, features, ideas,etc if you remember them it sets of three. Our District Convention will be starting in a few weeks in Prince Albert, Saskatchewanhosted by the Prince Albert Optimist Clubs.

So here are three solid reasons to attend:

Meet OI President Danny Rodgers and his wife Jill who are our guests. As Optimist members, we do not often get a chance to meet the president of Optimist International and engage in a conversation on the burning topic that is near and dear to our heart. This would be your chance.
Attend Quality Workshops hosted by some of our District Committee Chairs. If you are club president elect or a secretary/treasurer designate, the best training outside of the OI Annual Convention is always provided at the District Annual Convention. If you are an incoming Lieutenant Governor, you get the opportunity to spend an entire day in workshops covering all the information that you’ll need to enjoy a successful year. There is usually a wide assortment of interesting workshops held on Saturday for regular members to attend … all provided to enhance your ability to deliver quality, fun-filled projects and programs in your local communities.
Meet the Incoming District Team who will be introduced by incoming Governor Ted Huber and sworn into office by OI President Danny.

The most important reason to attend theDistrict Annual Convention is that it is usually a enjoyable mini vacationwhere you get a chance to enjoy the fellowship with the members from otherclubs throughout the District. There isample time to share experiences and pick the brains of the more experiencedOptimist members who will be there.

I’ve been attending District meetings foryears and I especially look forward to District Conventions as I always feelrecharged as we head into the final six weeks of the current Optimist year andwe start to plan for the coming year.

"Twenty Friends" Awards - District Challenge

Here’s a new initiative that clubs should be reminded about.

It’s an opportunity to bring funding into your club, which you can dedicate to additional programs or additional members. $40 of every $100 Friend of Optimist membership is sent directly to the club.

I’ve heard of one club in North Carolina which purchases a $17 engraved plaque to present to businesses who become Friends of Optimists, and the club still receives a net $23 return.

Breakfast Optimist Club President, Dennis Farnham, passed away in the afternoon on Saturday, July 16th, 2011 at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital.

Dennis was found in a stairwell at the Holiday Inn (where he worked part-time), CPR was administered and he was rushed to the hospital.

His wife Kathy and daughter Sheri received the call while on their way to Billings, turned around, arrived at the hospital in time to be at his side.

JT Kelly to Carry Canadian Flag at the OIJGC

The Optimist International Junior Golf Championships involve junior golfers representing more than 30 different nations from around the world. The championship event begins with the Opening Ceremony and Parade of Flags on Wednesday, July 27 - the night before the first tournament round for Boys 16-18 and Girls 15-18.

JT Kelly a 17-year old boy who was sponsored in our District Junior Golf Championships last year by the Airdrie Optimist Club, has been designated to carry the Canadian flag during this year’s Opening Ceremonies.

The AMS&NW District is once again proud that OI has honored us by selecting one of our junior golfers for a special event during the OIJGC. Last year, Colin Gunstream from Missoula was selected to be one member of the two-man team that represented the USA in last year’s OIJGC “Ryder Cup” Competition.

2011 OI Convention - Air Canada Flight Promotions

For those Canadian AMSNW Optimists considering attending the International Convention in Baltimore, Air Canada currently has a seat sale promotion till June 3rd.

Air fares are currently running $546.00 (return) + Airport Fees, for a grand total of around $685.00 (which is about $100 less than the Travelocity and Expedia sites were advertising last month).

I had a great time last year, and I think you will enjoy the events in and around Baltimore/Washington.

Here's another interesting question ... of those past District Secretary-Treasurers, how many have also served as past District Governors? Have you guessed yet? It's three ... Lyle, Gary and Mike also served as past Governors.

Knowing our history is an important hallmark of respect to those individuals and their families who donated a year of their lives and hundreds of hours of their time to serve all the members of this great District. We have a really good idea of who served in which positions, but we do have a few holes in our records, so we need your help to fill in the blanks. We currently have photos for 22 serving and past Governors but only 14 serving and past DSTs. We are also looking for the names of who served as a past DST for the years 1991-92 and 1973-74.

Alberta Boys Win OI U18 Curling Championships

Representing Alberta, team Vavrek of the Dawson Creek Curling Club is the 2011 Optimist International U18 Curling Champions. Top curling teams under 18 years of age from across Canada, the United States and Japan participated in the Championships that were held in Ontario, March 31 – April 4.

After completing the round robin portion of play with a record of 4 wins and 1 loss, the Alberta team advanced to face Washington in the semi-final. A five-ender secured the victory and a date with Ontario in the final.

The final was a close. The Alberta team entered the 8th and final end down 2 points with the hammer. When the last rock attempt at freeze by Ontario chipped off and sat open, Vavrek had an open hit for 5 and the win by a score of 7 - 4.

Congratulations go to Team Alberta, composed of: Skip Daylan Vavrek, third Jason Ginter, second Tristan Steinke, lead Sanjay Bowry, and coach Jeff Ginter. Extended thanks go to the home community of Dawson Creek and the Alberta Optimist Clubs who contributed to the success.

Taking Steps Toward a Cure - Get Moving for the CCC

2011 Alberta Optimist Juvenile Curling Results

Overall, the Alberta Optimist Juvenile Curling Championship tournament in Coaldale was a great event! It exceeded all expectations --- and required two sets of extra bleachers to accommodate the crowd.

District Governor Tim Bell made it down for the opening Banquet and did a great job of welcoming the teams and discussing the objectives of Optimist International and how Optimists tie into working with groups like the Juvenile curlers.

Unfortunately, Bill Cummer was ill and could not attend the event. But he phoned Roger Hohm, the tournament coordinator, and went over the message he wanted to present at the Closing Ceremonies. Roger was kind enough to present this message at the Closing, speaking on behalf of the Optimists.

The banners of several Optimist Clubs were displayed throughout the event.

The winning Juvenile Men’s Team was the Daylan Vavrek rink from the Dawson Creek Curling Club, who beat the S. Smith rink from the Garrison CC in Calgary 4-3 in the final game.

The winning Juvenile Women’s Team was the Kelsey Rocque rink from the Granite Curling Club in Edmonton; who beat the K. Brown rink from the Airdrie CC 4-2 in the final game.

Both the Daylan Vavrek rink and the Kelsey Rocque rink will now move on to play in the Optimist International U-18 (Juvenile) Curling Championships, March 31 through April 4, at the St. George’s GC in Etobicoke, Ontario; which is about 20 minutes from the Toronto Pearson Airport. This year, participants from 8 Canadian Provinces and 2 Canadian Territories, plus 8 States from the United States, and the country of Japan, will compete in the OI tournament.

Hotel Reservations: Ronda Vaughn, OI's Director of Meeting Services, reports that the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel is filling up fast and that there are less that 40 rooms left in the OI Convention block. If you haven't made your hotel reservations yet, now would be a good time to go to www.optimist.org , go the OI Convention page, and make your hotel reservation.

Convention Registration: The early bird registration deadline is Sunday, May 1, 2011, just 29 days away. If you haven't registered yet, you can save some money by registering by May 1.

Transportation to Baltimore: If you are flying your destination airport is the Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport--or BWI. It's a short shuttle ride from BWI to the hotel. If you are coming by train the train station at which you will arrive is Penn Station in Baltimore. It is a 10 minute cab ride to the hotel

Pre-Convention Baseball Game: We have already received several ticket orders for the Baltimore Orioles vs. St. Louis Cardinals baseball game on Thursday, June 30, 2011. Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic shrine-- Birthplace of the USA National Anthem

O! say can you see, by the dawn's early light, a large red, white and blue banner? Whose broad stripes and bright stars . . . were so gallantly streaming! over the star-shaped Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore, September 13-14, 1814. The valiant defense of the fort inspired Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner." It's a short Water Taxi ride from the hotel. They just opened a new Visitor & Education Center.

Historic Ships in Baltimore

Maritime history unfolds on the decks of USS Constellation, USCG Cutter Taney, Lightship Chesapeake and USS Torsk.

The USS Constellation, the last Civil War vessel afloat, was built in 1854 and is the last all-sail warship built by the US Navy. You can visit the museum and tour the ship.

The USS Torsk, launched in 1944, is a World War II era submarine docked near the National Aquarium at Baltimore. The Torsk is open for tours.

The home page of the website now has news items that will be updated regularly.

The main Visitors page features a series of Optimists talking about what Optimism means to them. Expect to see more Optimists featured in the near future!

Hello Fellow Optimists,

The Optimists in the Maryland/South Delaware District are looking forward to seeing all of you and the members in your Districts at the 2011 OI Convention in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 3, 4, & 5, 2011, at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel on the Inner Harbor in Downtown Baltimore.

Here are some answers to questions we have received:

1. What is there to do in Baltimore? The best way to find out is to go to www.baltimore.org and check out everything the city has to offer.

2. What is the closest airport to the convention hotel? Baltimore Washington International (BWI). Check out the airport's web site at www.bwiairport.com. It's a short shuttle ride (15-20 minutes) from the airport to the hotel.

3. We're coming by train. What is the closest train station to the convention hotel? Penn Station in Baltimore.

It's just a 10 minute cab ride from the hotel. See the notes on the OI web site about discounts that Amtrak is offering.

4. We're thinking about bringing our kids and/or our grandchildren to the convention. Will there be anything for them to do? You can register them to participate in the youth program. On Sunday afternoon they be going out on the harbor with the Urban Pirates; Sunday evening they'll have dinner and then participate in games, crafts, and a magic show; Monday--they'll visit the Maryland Science Center and the National Aquarium at Baltimore and in the evening they'll have dinner, participate in group activities and watch the July 4 Fireworks on the Harbor; and on Tuesday they'll spend the day at the Baltimore Zoo. It will definitely a fun time for them.

5. Will we be able to go to a baseball game like we did in Denver? The Baltimore Orioles will be out of town during the Convention, but they are playing the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday evening, June 30, 2011. We will have tickets for that game beginning in January. Yes, that June 30 is early, but you can arrive on Thursday, go to the game on Thursday evening and then do some sightseeing in the Baltimore area on Friday and Saturday before the convention begins on Sunday.

6. Does the Host Area Committee need any volunteers to assist at the Convention? Yes, we would be happy to have some convention attendees volunteer to assist us. Here are some things you could do:

a. Volunteer to assist at the Registration Booth for a couple of hours on Sunday and/or Monday

b. Serve as a hostess/hostess at the Appreciation Luncheon on Monday. You must purchase a ticket for the luncheon in order to do this. It's fun and we'll show you what to do.

c. Volunteer to be a chaperon at some of the youth activities. Chaperons must be over 18 and be an OI member or spouse of a member.

7. Does the Host Area Committee need an financial assistance? Yes, additional funds are welcome. We do have an opportunity for both individuals and/or clubs to make a donation to support the Host Area Committee. All individuals who make a donation of $25 (US) or more will receive a certificate and all Clubs that make a donation of $50 (US) or more will receive a Host Area Committee Sponsor banner patch. Names of all sponsors will be listed in the OI Convention Program. See flyer for more information.

2011 NACA Optimist Juvenile Curling Playdowns

On January 14-16, the 2011 NACA Optimist Juvenile Curling Playdowns took place at the Spruce Grove Curling Club. 12 Boys rinks and 7 Girls rinks participated.

As a result, the Ben Bellamy Boys rink from St. Albert, the Josh Deibert Boys rink from Saville, the Kelsey Rocque Girls rink from Granite, and the Kataryna Hagglund Girls rink from Crestwood will now represent NACA in the Alberta Optimist Juvenile Curling Championships in Coaldale on March 4-6.

The Coaldale CC is looking forward to hosting these championships and the Optimist reps that will attend. Optimist Clubs are encouraged to attend the Championships and to display their banners during the event. At previous Provincial Juvenile Curling Championships, the District Governor has spoken at the ceremonies during the event.

Keivin, Brian and Samantha Wallace attended the event and the Edmonton Dinner Club banner was displayed during the playdowns.

Roger Holm is the event Chair in Coaldale and is our contact for the Alberta Optimist Juvenile Curling Championships. Please let me know if you plan to attend or if you need more information.

Clubs can save changes as they go along.

Revised District Directory Now Available

DST Marilyn has highlighted in yellow all of the changes so they will be easy to spot. We thank those clubs for contacting DST Marilyn or Optimist Gord with updates to their club contact information.

Please review your personal and club information and report any changes to DST Marilyn.

Producing the original version of the District Directory is a time consuming task and the DST relies on the changes that club submit through Club Officer Election Reports. This is a subtle reminder for clubs to submit their COER immediately after their club elections this spring. Changes throughout the year should be submitted to OI using the Club Roster Adjustment (CRA) forms, and you can email changes to the DST.

It is with great sadness that I send this message to you. Marion Cummer, wife of Optimist Bill, passed away on Thursday, Jan 6th.

Bill Cummer has been a long time and devoted Optimist, and always active with the Optimist Club of Calgary and High River Optimist Clubs. With an active Optimist father, Denise Dolph became active with both the Optimist Club of Calgary and the Dinner Optimist Clubs. Both Bill & Denise have served on the District executive.

Please remember Marion in your thoughts and prayers.

Put Your Club Online

Many of you have noticed that the Edmonton Dinner Optimist Club has recently published a new website. We are preparing a set of tutorials on how that site was created. The tutorials are organized into collections called modules, each with a set of lessons. The plan is to publish one lesson per day (except Sundays) so there will be six lessons published per week. We added lessons back-dated to start December 1st, 2010, so there are now 26+ lessons published.

If you want to get a look at the outline plan for the entire "online course", we invite you to look at "Build a Club Website With Blogger".

We are going to add a blog feed in the right column that will display the 5 most recent lesson titles so that you can open a new lesson as they are published. Each lesson has comments enabled, so if you have a question or would like to comment on a lesson, we invite you to participate. Lessons will get revised and corrected based on reader feedback in the comments.

Optimist Festive Showcase Concert

The Optimist Club of Calgary has been presenting the “Optimist Festive Showcase” annually for a number of years. The Showcase has become an anticipated event, leading up to Christmas. The Showcase provides an opportunity for a number of local groups to perform for their families and the public in a premier facility. The Optimist club of Calgary has supported some of the groups in the past. These groups are now helping the Optimist Club of Calgary raise funds by performing in the Showcase.

A Skate Park For Penhold Youth @ Aviva Community Fund

Congratulations to the Penhold and District Optimist Club for your project making it to the semi-finals of the competition. Voting started on December 2nd, and they need all of our help for them to make it to the finals. We encourage all Optimists in the District to take the time to vote daily for this project!

Marilyn is the last remaining charter member of the Calgary Dinner Optimist Club, formed in 1994. She has served as Club President several times (attaining the levels of Honor and Distinguished) and as Club Secretary.

Marilyn is a past Lieutenant Governor for Zone 6 in 2001-02 (Honor) and 2008-09. She is a BOE helping to build the Traditional Optimist Club of Calgary.

Marilyn served as the first District Juvenile Curling Chair and was instrumental in getting Optimist Juvenile Curling started in Alberta. Marilyn served as the Essay Contest Chair last year and this year has volunteered to serve as the District Secretary-Treasurer and Activities & CPA Chair.

"I became an Optimist to help serve the youth in my area. I ontinue to be part of this organization because of the difference my club is making in the Calgary area by helping youth at all levels. What is I enjoy most about this organization is the people that I have met helping youth in the District and beyond."

As part of the District Services Team, my role is to promote the participation by member Clubs in all of the youth program and community-serving projects sponsored by Optimist International. I'm also responsible to organize the judging of the Club CPA and Scrapbooks at the 1st Quarter District Conference in 2011.

Why did you become an Optimist? "Dad was a member before me, and loved working with the Optimists."

As a serving webmaster for his club, George runs a website and a facebook page. At the 3rd Quarter District Conference on May 15, 2010, George presented an informative workshop about using 'Vertical Response' as a mass email tool to regularly send out club bulletins to club members. George brings a wealth of experience to the position of District Bulletin Editor.

What is the primary reason you continue to serve as an Optimist? "I enjoy helping kids, and the fellowship is fantastic."

Understanding and utilizing print and online media can greatly extend the reach to the general public that a club needs to ensure a successful project or fund raiser. Club bulletins provide that 'personal touch' and are an excellent tool for members to recruit new members. Besides publishing a regular District Bulletin, George is willing to help any club with publishing a club newsletter and produce press releases.

Ray joined in 1982 and has served as Club President (Prince Albert High Noon). Ray is a Builder of Excellence helping to build the Border City Lloydminster club. Ray has served as Zone 7 Lieutenant Governor (2002-03) and District Secretary-Treasurer (1988-89).

Ray is busy planning the Annual District Convention scheduled in Prince Albert for 11-13 August 2011, and he is looking forward to welcoming everyone to Prince Albert next summer.

Why did you become an Optimist? "To meet new people in Town and have a good time."

District meetings are not just about business ... they offer excellent training workshops and opportunities for members to network with fellow members at a wide variety of fellowship activities. Organized as 'bring the family' events, each District meeting offers a 'Companions Programs' for non-member spouses and a 'Kids Program' for the youngsters.

What do you enjoy most about being an Optimist? "The variety of different people and the variety of different projects that serve the kids."

Lyle joined the Optimist club in White City as a charter member in 1987 and remained a member until its’ closure in 2006. He was President for 3 years during the club’s life, first one 89-90. As President, I became interested in
District involvement and became Lt. Governor in 1992-93. In 2005, he joined the Downtowner’s Optimist Club of Regina and was President in 2008-09.

Lyle served as our District Governor in 2002-03, and has served as District Secretary-Treasurer for Gary Cross in 1996-97, Membership Chair, International Ambassador, Candidate Qualifications Chair and is serving his second consecutive term as the District Foundation Rep. Lyle looks forward to promoting your participating in OI Foundation fund raising.

Many of the OI programs offered by clubs are financially sponsored by the Optimist International Foundation (OIF) and the Canadian Children Optimist Foundation (CCOF). The role of the DFR is to coordinate fund raising efforts for the foundations and on behalf of the foundations recognize those Optimist members who have made significant contributions over the past year. Good morning AMS&NW Club Leaders!

It doesn’t seem possible that a week has already passed since I joined Governor Tim and so many other wonderful AMS&NW members at your first quarterly meeting in Great Falls - thank you so much for your hospitality! But even more so, thank you each for accepting your current position – whether this is your first time as a club officer, or you are seasoned in your position – Governor Tim and the members of your clubs wouldn’t be able to do “their jobs” if you hadn’t accepted yours!

International President Danny Rodgers has recorded a special video message for all of us in the Great Plains Region. Please scroll to the bottom of this message; I’ve highlighted Danny’s in yellow.

Mike is passionate about Junior Golf and is active with promoting Juvenile Curling throughout Alberta.

What is the primary reason you continue to serve as an Optimist? "I continue serving as an Optimist because there are several Optimist projects that I feel very strongly about and I want to help them succeed."

Mike served as a Distinguished LG for Zone 6 in 2005-2006. He served as District Essay Chair and District Oratorical Chair 2007-2008.

What do you enjoy most about being an Optimist? "I really enjoy the positive feedback I get from the community when I'm assisting on a project."

The Optimist International Juvenile Curling Competition started as a partnership between Alberta Optimists clubs and the Alberta Curling Association to form a curling competition for under-18 youth curlers. The first competition was held in Calgary in 2001, and it has grown into an international competition that features boys and girls teams from Canada, the United States and Japan. The Optimist International Youth Programs Committee officially sanctioned Juvenile Curling as an Optimist International Program in late 2009.

My primary role is to promote the Juvenile Curling Competitions and encourage Optimist Clubs throughout the District to participate and assist with local U18 youth curling competitions.

Oratorical Scholarship Rule Change

Beginning this Optimist year, the Oratorical Contest age limit has been raised to under the age of 19 as of December 31 of the current school year.

This change provides many new opportunities for Clubs to find contestants! Try approaching a debate team or drama club at the local high school to find new participants. Invite the Members of a local JOOI Club to enter. Hang posters promoting the contest with your Club Chair’s contact information in the library or local community center. Ask the local high school if they will run a promotional piece about the contest in the school newspaper.

Clubs are still encouraged to invite junior high and middle school students to participate. Competing in the contest provides them with valuable public speaking experience and gives them a chance to showcase their skills. Students may enter the contest every year until they win a District-level scholarship, as long as they meet the age requirement.

The decision to raise the age eligibility requirement for the Oratorical Contest was made by the 2009-2010 International Activities Committee. This decision was made after a lengthy discussion and thoughtful consideration. The committee saw merit in making the requirements consistent for both the Optimist Oratorical and Essay scholarship contests. It was recognized that students in their junior and senior year of high school are the most focused on obtaining scholarships since they will be attending college in the near future. The committee felt it would benefit and serve more youth if the age limit was raised and create a larger contestant pool for Clubs and Districts. Committee Members also felt that public speaking is an important skill for older students to have that will be utilized greatly during their college years and even in the workplace.

The rationale for allowing the younger students to compete with the older students has not changed. Since there has been no minimum age for a number of years, many Clubs have had students in the 5th and 6th grades competing against high school sophomores. Allowing the younger students to participate gives them the opportunity to practice their public speaking skills. There have been a number of cases where Districts have had students at age 10-12 scoring higher in the contest than students at 15-16. If the young students do not win a District scholarship, they are welcome to continue to enter the contest each year until they do. They have the opportunity to learn from the older students while gaining valuable experience and fine-tuning their skills.

While some students may be deterred from competing against older students, there is also a number who will be accepting and ready to take on the challenge. The students who shy away from the contest this year may see how well their peers did and decide to compete next year. The intent is not to deter these younger students from participating but to open this opportunity to more students.

Roger is a long serving Optimist since 1984 who is strongly committed to leadership development as part of building a strong District. In addition to serving a the District Governor in 2003-04, Roger has served as Leadership Development, Membership, Retention and New Club Building Chairs in previous years. Roger served as Club President (Distinguished) in 1997-98 and as Zone 1 Lieutenant Governor for 1998-2000.

Why did I become an Optimist?  "Initially to get on a softball team the optimist club had."

Roger just completed a year on the OI Convention Committee that planned and ran the Annual Convention in Denver. Roger enjoys helping the kids and all the great friends he has made because of Optimism.

What is the primary reason I continue to serve as an Optimist?  "I believe in all the aspects of Optimism and the great things we stand for."

As part of the Growth Team, his role is to plan, promote and conduct the training of Club and District leaders making them more effective leaders. Roger believes in all the aspects of Optimism and the great things we stand for and he invites everyone to attend the quarterly District Conferences to participate in the many informative workshops.

What do I enjoy most about being an Optimist?  "Not only helping the kids, but all the great friends I have made because of Optimism, throughout this District and in my own club."

Jay joined the Billings Breakfast Club in 2002 and he is strongly committed to increasing membership in each club throughout the District. He has served as Distinguished Club President (2005-06) and Distinguished and Outstanding Zone 4 Lieutenant Governor (2006-07).

Why did you become an Optimist?  I became an Optimist because I was asked. I had belonged to a service club (Kiwanis) since 1982. When a job change forced me to resign in 2001 because I could not attend the 2 hour luncheon meetings, I felt something missing from my life. I enjoyed giving back to my community and I enjoyed associating with people of true character. When my best friend in the whole wide world, Greg Piper, asked me to become a Breakfast Optimist, I jumped at the opportunity.

Jay last served as the District Junior Golf Chair for 2007-2009 running two very successful District Junior Golf Competitions. Jay enjoys being an Optimist and invites everyone to spread the gift of membership to a friend.

What do you hope to accomplish in your District position this year?  I want to teach my fellow Optimists how to great ambassadors for Optimism. When their enthusiasm and character shine through they cannot help but succeed when they ask a friend to become an Optimist.

Membership is the lifeblood of any Optimist club. Clubs that run one community service project a month, one fund raiser per quarter, ensure that all members are assigned to a club committee, enjoy a strong and active membership. Running a successful new member recruitment drive is vital to the future success of your club. I invite you to attend the quarterly District Conference workshops on membership.

What is the primary reason you continue to serve as an Optimist?  That’s easy. I’m selfish. I get more out of being an Optimist than I put into it. In return for a few hours of my time I get to associate with the finest people in the world. I get the satisfaction of seeing kids realize opportunities that they would never have had if it had not been for our organization. Who wouldn’t want to do this?

Edie is a Charter President (Distinguished) in Blackfalds in 2002-03 and Zone 3 Lieutenant-Governor in 2003-04. Edie previously served on the Growth Teams for Past Governor Don Morrison (as New Club Building Chair), Norm Sagen (as Membership Chair) and Doug Kirby (as Membership Chair) where she was successful in helping the District achieve Distinguished growth goals.

How did I become an Optimist? "I saw an ad in our local utility bill that asked 'Would you like to help the kids in your community?'. I went to the information meeting hosted by the Red Deer Optimist Club and I liked what I heard. We are a small community and we did not have a lot for the kids in our town to do. Since the Optimist Club's organization there is a ton of stuff for our kids as well as a JOOI Club and an Octagon Club. I love the friendships I have made! My closest friends are Optimist members!"

Building a new Optimist club in a community without a club is one of the most satisfying projects that you can participate in, and is one of the greatest gifts that you can give to a local community. I really believe that every community needs an Optimist Club! I would like to help start a new club in all the small communities, like my own, because it has helped our little town so much. I invite you to attend our New Club Building workshops at the quarterly District Conferences this year.

Lee has server as an Optimist in St. Albert since the early 90's. She has served as a Distinguished Club President and Secretary-Treasurer. In addition to serving as Distinguished & Outstanding Governor in 2000-01, Lee has served on previous District teams as Club Services, Faculty, Essay and Candidate Qualifications Chairs. Lee is looking forward to meeting fellow Optimists who want to build new JOOI clubs throughout the District.

JOOI clubs are often more active delivering projects in their community. Building a JOOI club goes a long way to helping to train the leaders of tomorrow. I invite you to attend the JOOI club building workshops at the quarterly District Conferences this year.

Jeff joined the Great Falls Uptown Club in 2001 and has served as Honor Club President in 2003-04 and as Distinguished Lt. Governor in 2006-07. Jeff has been bestowed a life time membership by his club for his work as an Optimist.

"Throughout my military career I believed that only with the help of many can we make a difference. I was introduced to the Club and found that here were many who wished to help a very needy and deserving population of our community. I appreciated the intense meaning of the creed which supports our organization's goals and philosophy and I appreciated the opportunity to give back to my community."

As the PGI Chair Jeff plans to encourage all the incoming Lt. Governors and incoming Presidents to get every member who already has achieved one level of PGI to aspire to move up at least one more level. In addition he hopes that all the new members recruited this year will be enrolled into PGI and as a minimum will complete their first level as quickly as possible.

"Each year that I have enjoyed working with the club, makes me less cynical about where our younger generation will lead us. I enjoy seeing the effort that we do materialize into some greater good that one person alone could not accomplish. Some of our working members I know have their own problems and concerns, but regardless, will take some time off without first thinking of themselves and whats in it for them. It is a pleasure to work with a strong team who see the rewards of their labor without first thinking of themselves."

Running an active PGI program at the club level helps to strengthen an active membership by enabling them to take ownership of their participation. We will continue to run PGI training modules at the quarterly District Conferences. This is an excellent opportunity to train your next club PGI Chair.

"I have found that the best part of being an Optimist is what it has forced me to become ... I realized that the sincerity of those that are in the organization with me is habit forming, and not only brings out the best in kids, it also brings out the best in the adults. I believe I have been better prepared to perform my duties at work and at home with a better feeling of satisfaction and a far better appreciation for our fellow man."
